I have the pleasure of befriending an amazing woman who goes by the artistic name of of MoBlak. She is one half of a musical duo that goes by Armed Rhymery. The wordplay is amazing and the messages are always needed and often inspirational. She helps in the community through various programs targeting bullying and hits the pavement when it comes to melanin civil rights✊🏾. A breath of fresh air if you asked my completely biased opinion.
Mo took the time to answer a few questions about her legacy and art, below are the questions and answers 🥰
How long have you shared your art with the world and how did you start?
I've been sharing my art as long as I can remember. My mom noticed I was creative as a kid and always catered to it by introducing me to dance, painting, keyboard etc. I started writing music on and off when I was about 8 which stemmed from me writing poetry. When I was about 15 I started taking music much more serious as an emotional outlet and a career path and started recording myself and sharing my music online and with people at school.
What or who is your biggest inspiration?
I think my biggest inspiration in life is my literal need to escape normalcy and really create and control my own life as I imagine it. Having a normal life is one of my worst fears so making sure I create one for myself that suits what I need as a person inspires me to keep creating and keep pushing toward my goals even when it seems impossible. My biggest inspiration as a person would be my mom for sure. She's strong, independent, selfless, individual and fearless. All things I admire and strive for.
What do you want to leave behind?
Of course I wanna leave some really intentional and timeless music that can continue to impact people throughout time. I definitely want to share knowledge and inspire as many people as I can but I think the most important thing I wanna leave behind is as much love as possible for my close people and anyone else I encounter and have the opportunity to share love with. That's the most important thing in life when it all boils down.
What is it that the general public can do to support you?
Listen to my music and find a way to take something positive from it, even if it's just a dope vibe. If you love it, share it with someone you love. You can find links to all my music, visuals, social media links and other content in one place at ArmedRhymery.com or you can follow me on Instagram @moblak
What, if any, advice would you give to someone that is looking to grow within your field?
A few pieces of advice for anyone trying to grow as an artist would be to throw yourself into your art 100% without holding back or fearing vulnerability. Always stay true to yourself and your art as you grow and evolve and always keep genuine people around you who's values and goals align with yours. Be humble, but be bold and confident as well. As an creative, it's natural to gravitate toward other creatives because you share passion, but it's always important to protect your peace and be selective of who you keep in your inner circle. Lastly I would say to believe in yourself wholeheartedly because if you don't, it's possible no one else will. But if you do, that belief will spread. Your vision is yours, so you can't expect everyone's eyes to see it at first. Having something unconventional as your life goal is frustrating and difficult but persistence makes it all pay off in time.
Thank you Mo for sharing your art, music, and self with me and the eyes that choose to join. You are so loved and appreciated. ❤️
