Hey 👋🏾 Hope all is well in your world. Tomorrow is a some what unofficial holiday and I am an avid participant in the festivities. A large sector of the world doesn't know about the existence of "4/20" and most people that engage in celebrating do not know the origin. I'm taking the time to give a little information on the topic and inform all who lay eyes on this post of the somewhat interesting origins of the day and those three numbers.

When mentioning the number 420, 4:20, or 4/20 its all in reference to the consumption of cannabis. Many don’t know the origins of the "420" reference, but have vague recollections of once-heard tales about its origins. Some believe it’s the number of active chemicals in marijuana, others that it’s based on teatime in Holland. Some reference the birthday of Adolf Hitler (April 20, 1889), and others Bob Dylan's legendary “Everybody must get stoned” refrain from his hit “Rainy Day Women No. 12 & 35” (12 multiplied by 35 does equal 420).. I was always under the assumption that the coined term came from a police code that referenced the use of marijuana, and after speaking to a few other people I realized that I was not alone in my thinking. What I would find out years later is that was untrue. According to abc 10 news, "Some say 420 is the penal code section for marijuana use in California. But that's fiction. Section 420.1 refers to obstructing entry on public land.
Another rumor is that 420 is the police radio code for "Marijuana smoking in progress." Again not true.
The only police radio code we found that uses 420 is in Las Vegas and it's used for a homicide.
So what's the truth?
4-20 actually came into being in 1971 at San Rafael High School in Northern California." Well there goes what was told to me for years when I inquired about it. To further elaborate on the topic, I must take a little dive into the actions of 5 teens in Marin, Ca.

-the Waldos 2018
These individuals would meet up by a wall outside of their San Rafael school for stoner activities; the meeting spot inspired the nickname "the Waldos". In the fall of 1971, the Waldos learned of a Coast Guard member who had planted a cannabis plant and could no longer tend to the crop. Provided with a treasure map (some say by the plant’s owner himself) supposedly leading to the abandoned product, the group would meet at the Louis Pasteur statue outside their high school at least once a week conduct a search. Their meeting time? 4:20 p.m, after practice (they were all athletes). The Waldos would pile into a car, smoke some pot and scour the nearby Point Reyes Forest for the elusive, free herb. One of the original members of the Waldos, Steve Capper, told the Huffington Post, “We would remind each other in the hallways we were supposed to meet up at 4:20. It originally started out 4:20-Louis, and we eventually dropped the Louis.” The original members are Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich.
You're probable wondering how a few teenagers were able to spread a message so far, especially before the ease and access of the internet. Well a few members of the Waldos had access the the legendary group Grateful Dead.
Mark Gravitch’s father managed the Dead’s real estate. Dave Reddix’s older brother was good friends with Dead bassist Phil Lesh and managed a Dead sideband. Reddix became a roadie for the Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. At 4:20 p.m., it was time for the Deadhead crew to relax with cannabis, and 420 spread throughout the worldwide network of Dead fans. With the growth of the success within the band, the terminology followed and grew as well. Now the term and what it means is easily accessible and uplifted by those who partake in cannabis consumption.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the information that led me to be able to provide you guys with this post. I went a little further down a hole in regards to both the good and bad optics of using cannabis and found a pretty good article to share.
4/20 is just another day for a lot of people while to others the annual celebration is appreciated. I will be spending mine around friends and loved ones in my annual celebration. Thanks for your peepers today 🫶🏾
